Assoenologists Reassure Wine Safety Against Coronavirus
Italy was the first European country to be gripped by coronavirus even though it had been hit with the initial stages of ‘lockdown’. Also, it had to handle defending its food industry from defamatory remarks and requests for virus-free food and wine, as some producers in the market have been requested to issue ‘corona virus-free’ documentation for the export of its produce.
Regarding the COVID-19 emergency. Numerous requests from Assoenologists arrive of members and other professionals categories, about different themes, including the contamination of the wine, the corruption of packaging, the wine limits already sulfation of the virus.
Reassurance was reiterated in a statement by Riccardo Cotarella, president of the Assoenologist Association, from Press office Assoenologi Milan, March 12, 2020.
In this regard, with due caution, for as long as it is a new virus, Assoonologi. After a discussion with important representatives of the Modica community, notes the following:
The survival of the virus in wine appears impossible as it is a concomitant combination of the presence of alcohol, of a hypotonic environment and the presence of polyphenol, prevents the life and multiplication of the virus itself;
- Very remote, if not even statistically non-existent, contamination appears from packaging, also in consideration of the short life of the virus and the absence of a potential living “biological” host.
- Moderate consumption of wine, linked to responsible drinking, can contribute to better hygiene of the oral cavity or and pharynx, the latter area where viruses nest during infections.
